Densha Otoko – 電車男

15 07 2007

Yesterday night, I was at the lobby with Minerva, Thiago, Ben and Baska, watching Densha Otoko (電車男), a japanese movie about an otaku (a japanese geek) who saves some women from a drunk guy at a train, and ends up dating one of those women.

Like most geeks, he’s shy and gets easily nervous, so in order to know how to be liked by this girl, he seeks advice on an internet forum, using the nickname “densha otoko” (電車男, which means “the train man”), where his online friends help him and encourage him.

I liked this movie a lot, it really was funny, and also good japanese listening practice. Call me wussy or whatever you like, but I have a weakness for love stories with happy endings. And also, being a geek myself, I cannot help but to feel some empathy. Densha-kun is like some sort of hope for all of us geeks who are pretty unlucky at love.

The story is supposed to be based on a true story, and the forum posts from the real densha otoko and his friends were saved, and later published as a book, which became a best seller in Japan. There’s also a TV series and a manga book on this story.

well FER this is a very nice listening practice, going to the movies, it helps to learn new words and get familiar with japanese language sounds, also develops your accurate concentration. But the movie was all in japanese without subtitles? , it seems better.
