It’s Karate!!!

12 04 2007

From now on, I will be posting in english, since most of you speak english already (if you don’t, just bear with it or have someone else translate it for you), and most of the people I will meet in the next few years probably won’t be able to understand even one bit of spanish, besides, this way I get to practice a little for the TOEFL exam, which I think I’ll be taking the next month. You guys can just continue to leave messages in spanish, or in japanese if you want (at least that way I get to practice my japanese), I really don’t care about it. :?

Well, these past few days I’ve been eating a lot at the cafeterias inside the campus. On Tuesday I went for lunch to Komaba I campus with Candy, from Peru, and Paulo, from Portugal. The food was quite cheap and very good, also the cafeteria is really nice. When we were leaving, we met another japanese girl that could actually speak spanish (and she was very good at it), she proposed me to apply for a job as a radio host at NHK (she works there), since they also air news programs in spanish. I guess I will think about it, I sure could use some extra money in my pocket. :D

Yesterday (and today also) I went with Hui to the underground cafeteria at Hongo campus (it’s below the auditorium), and I had like 4 different bowls (in case you are wondering, that’s quite a lot) in my tray for only 500 yen (500 yen = 5.00 USD more or less), that’s probably the cheapest meal I’ve ever had since I came here last week, the only problem is that to get from Komaba to Hongo I have to spend 190 yen in the subway, and that’s only if I take the longer (but cheaper) route.

Afterwards we went to Shibuya to buy some stuff. I used this opportunity to buy a very thick blanket, since it’s damn freezing cold at night here at the lodge and the heating is not really that good in here. Also, I bought some food ingredients, since I can’t afford to keep going out to have my meals (food is really expensive here).

After returning to the dormitory, I cooked some rice and chicken, the chicken turned out good, the rice was freaking awful, at the toxic level. I guess I still need some practice (or at least some good poison medicine). :(

Around 8:00 p.m., Hui and I left for Komaba International Students House to take karate classes (they are free so I ‘d better take the chance). Well, the class was a little… painful, but fun I guess, I still don’t know how they manage to sit on the floor in that way without feeling their feet getting all numb, and also how they stretch their bodies in those ways. The sensei was like all hyper and stuff during the class, yelling all kinds of weird stuff in japanese as if we actually could understand anything he was saying. He’s a nice guy though, very funny also. When the class was over, we decided that it was better for us to not take any more classes, or else we would probably end up dead by the end of the month.

So, this morning we had the japanese placement test, in case you didn’t know, this is a test for measuring your skills in japanese language so that they can put you on an appropiate class according to the level of your knowledge in japanese. The test was kinda hard, but since it’s not that important to get full marks on it, I was not really that much stressed about it. I also had an interview in japanese, and that wasn’t so bad at all.

In the night, I went out for dinner to Shibuya with the guys from the lodge. I had soba with beef, it was quite good actually, so I’m starting to change my first impression on soba. We walked all the way back from Shibuya to Komaba, it took like half an hour to get here, it takes some time, but it’s cheap and it’s a good exercise.
